Riding Therapy

The physical benefits achieved through therapeutic riding are due to the movement, warmth and rhythm of the horse. The movement transferred to the Rider by the a pony is 3-dimensional, anterior/posterior (backwards and forwards), lateral (side to side) and rotational. All these movements are repeated with each step taken!

With each step the Rider accommodates the movement, maintaining posture and balance over a moving base. Each step displaces the Riders centre of gravity stimulating a continuous righting reaction.

This brings about improvement in

  • Strength of core muscles
  • Balance
  • Muscle tone
  • Sitting posture
  • Muscle strength
  • Muscle symmetry
  • Muscle co-ordination
  • Functional movement
  • Gait pattern

In addition to the physical benefits we can often expect improvements in

  • Self-confidence
  • Motivation
  • Concentration
  • Social skills
  • Academic performance

Riding Therapy can also have benefits for Supported Volunteers learning about horse care;

  • Hygiene
  • Diet
  • Caring
  • Responsibility

All this can be achieved by our teams at Muirfield Riding Therapy! Through regular reviews with the therapists, Instructors and Key Workers the difference we can make can be measured.

Oh,  yes and did we say? It is great FUN!
